This represents a shift in Sony Online's strategy. Previously, the company struggled to find "the next EverQuest." But with EverQuest II doing a fraction of World of Warcraft's business, and acquired titles like Vanguard dead on arrival, Sony is taking a broader approach. A console MMO? This potentially huge audience is almost completely untapped (the only exceptions being the PS2-era Final Fantasy XI and EverQuest Online Adventures). Smedley even hints at MMO content for the PSP!

This is a new angle. This is something that nobody's tried in a big way. This is the perfect way to leverage PSN's free networking. This is a great differentiator between the 360 and the PS3. In short, it's a smart strategy.
