According to an announcement today on the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning site EA is combining its RPG and MMOs studios into a new group that will include both BioWare and Mythic.

Mythic GM and co-founder Mark Jacobs left the company yesterday, June 23rd.

BioWare co-founder and General Manager Ray Muzyka will lead the new RPG/MMO studio group as Group General Manager. BioWare's other co-founder, Greg Zeschuk, will be the group's Chief Creative Officer.

Mythic co-founder and COO Rob Denton will move up to Mark Jacobs' vacated position as Mythic General Manager, and will report to Muzyka. BioWare's studios remain unchanged and will continue to report to Muzyka.

BioWare is currently working on three major RPG projects: Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins and the company's first MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Gerald says: Mark Jacobs has been an outspoken force in the MMO development field since the days of Dark Age of Camelot, so I'm interested in seeing where he ends up going after some long-overdue time off.

This announcement can mean big things for EA, particularly in the MMO space. Star Wars: The Old Republic is the only MMO that I feel has a shot of seriously competing with World of Warcraft, and this merge could have a profound effect on that game's future.

By merging what is arguably the top RPG developer in BioWare with Mythic's experienced MMO studio, EA may be creating the unstoppable force needed to face off against Blizzard's immovable object.
