Luxoflux was a software development studio based in Santa Monica, California. The company hit the big time immediately with its lead title, a car combat game called Vigilante 8. Further V8 games as well as Star Wars Demolition followed for PlayStation, N64 and Dreamcast platforms before the company moved onto the next generation of game systems with the True Crime franchise. The company was acquired in October of 2002 by publisher Activision (which worked with Luxoflux on both V8 and True Crime, amongst other projects.)
Despite early success, Luxoflux lost its reputation as a bleeding-edge developer as the next generation of consoles neared. Founders Peter Morawiec and Adrian Stephens left to found their own company (Isopod Labs) in January 2007 for personal reasons, producing a remake of Vigilante 8 for Xbox 360. Luxoflux went on to work on licensed properties rather than unique IP late in its lifespan, to varying degrees of success and with little reputation status added to its brand name. As part of a series of financial cutbacks at parent company Activision, Luxoflux was closed on February 11, 2010.
