The German development company Piranha Bytes was founded by five former staff members of the also Bochum based company Greenwood Entertainment Software GmbH on 01/10/1997. Together with a team of three freelance programmers, the development of their first title, the 3D RPG Gothic, was started.
The company re-established itself as Pluto 13 in 2002 following legal troubles with a production company that had acquired Piranha Bytes in 1999, and the team continues to produce titles under the Pluto 13 name.
